Scottish Grand National

This year you’ve probably promoted the Cheltenham Festival and been all over the Grand National but what about the Scottish Grand National?

Although the Grand National eclipses its Scottish counterpart in terms of international exposure it is still a race worthy of your attention.

· The Race was first run in 1858

· Initially, the majority of ‘fences’ in the race were actually stone walls!

· The race moved to its current home at Ayr Racecourse in 1966, having previously been run at Houston, Renfrewshire and then Bogside, Irvine.

· The Scottish Grand National is the 5 th largest race of the year for Coral retail, in terms of turnover.

· Coral is the main sponsor of the Scottish Grand National and has been since 2007.

· The race is part of the Scottish Grand national Festival run at Ayr over Friday 19 th and Saturday 20 th April 2013.

· The Festival comprises 16 competitive races with over £530,000 in prize money.

· This year’s Grand National winner, Auroras Encore, is currently 12/1 and will be ridden by the same jockey; Ryan Mania who recently recovered from serious injury after falling from his mount at Hexham, just one day after his victory at Aintree.

· Four horses have won both the Grand National and the Scottish Grand National but the only time it has been achieved in the same year was by Red Rum in 1973

The regular £50 sign up offer for new customers will remain in place throughout the Festival.

Those of you already using horse racing creative don’t need to make any changes.

Rival D´Estruval heads the sponsor´s betting for Saturday´s Coral Scottish Grand National at 6-1, following the latest entry stage for the Ayr showpiece. Always Right is the 8-1 second favourite, ahead of Godsmejudge at 10-1, while the recent Grand National winner, Auroras Encore, is 12-1 to complete a famous double.

"Rival D´Estruval´s owner, Ray Anderson Green, has won the Coral Scottish Grand National twice with Merigo, and his runner is a worthy favourite having recovered from a fall when travelling well in the four-miler at last month´s Cheltenham Festival," said Coral´s David Stevens.

"However he should face stern opposition on Saturday, with Auroras Encore sure to be popular following his Aintree heroics, despite a weights rise that provoked trainer´s husband, Harvey Smith, to give a verbal two-fingers to the handicapper!" added Stevens.
