One of the best arcade games in 1990s, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs was a huge success in Canada, India, USA and other countries. We still can find some games in malls and other establishments. It`s always good to spend some coins to remember how good a game with such a simple premise and such a crazy story was.
This insane creation is not something that originates from games. Its origin came from a comic book called the Xenozoic Tales, which was later known only as Cadillacs and Dinosaurs.
The comic book saga was published by Kitchen Sink Press in a very irregular way, between 1987 and 1996, lasting 14 issues over this long period of time. Its writer and creator, Mark Schultz, seemed not to have much time to develop his ideas.
Despite the few numbers, Xenozoic Tales proved popular and spawned a design for television and other products such as card games, dolls and even candy bars. It was with these products that Cadillacs and Dinosaurs were born.
The Cadillacs and Dinosaurs video game was released in 1993 by Capcom, the same studio behind the popular Street Fighter that was at the time the company`s main game.
Cadillacs and Dinosaurs could be classified as a beat`em up game, that is, the famous hit and run genre. The idea is to walk the 2D scene with your character and punch everything that comes ahead, whether humans, dinosaurs or machines. This type of game became very famous in the 90`s and the title is among its main representatives.
The four selectable characters were Jack Tenrec (the main one with balanced strokes), Hannah Dundee (the most fragile but agile woman in the group), Mustapha Cairo (the fastest in the group) and Mess O`Bradovich (the strongest and most with more devastating blows). Each has its own characteristics, powers, weaknesses, and special abilities.
Players needed to advance in eight different scenarios with various intersections, fighting along the way against common enemies and bosses. The game ended in an epic battle against the great villain.
Interestingly, despite the title, the dinosaurs were not quite enemies of the players. It turns out that the game world mixes the age of monsters with a futuristic and almost cyberpunk scene, where the characters walk around with a Cadillac. The dinosaurs appeared through the scenes and could be attacked or not! It was the choice of the player and this could influence the battles.
For example, a dinosaur could show up green, meaning that it will not attack players. But if attacked, it will change to red, aggressiveness, and attack everyone. A peaceful triceratops could be instructed to attack by villains who could beat the animal mercilessly. In the case of a T-Rex there were no excuses, the monster already appeared on the screen in red, devouring all.
