Have you ever wondered how many swimming pools could possibly be enough for a skyscraper? Well a new super-tall luxury residential tower being built at Dubai Marina could finally answer this question.
23 Marina is a 395 meter tall residential building, now under construction, that will rise 89 floors above ground. It’s been designed by the International Building Centre with roughly octagonal floor plates and a 64 meter tall spire above the main structure that helps turn it into what looks like a giant pencil with typical Dubaiesque cladding of blue and white.
23 Marina is being developed by Hircon International who has deliberately rejected the multi-use concept that many of Dubai's taller towers enjoy, going for a solely residential building with 288 apartments and only a few extra facilities such as a three storey spa which will, of course, be for the exclusive use of the occupiers.

Hircon believe that once the initial glut of towers in Dubai are completed theirs will stand tall next to the competition in offering the quiet life with exclusive residential addresses and privacy that multi-use skyscrapers cannot.
What currently makes the building stand out from the masses is the 57 swimming pools it has on offer to residents. What does one need with 57 swimming pools you might ask?
Well each of the duplex apartments will have an L shaped plunge pool of a mere 5.2 meters by 2 meters located on their projecting triangular balconies - less a swimming pool and more an oversized bath making it unlikely Michael Phelps will set up a training base in one of the apartments.
Hircon International, saw initial works on site begin in July 2006. The scale of the scheme has proven to be enormous with the 150,000 man hours of work, 1,400 tonnes of steel and 7,000 cubic meters of concrete just to build the main 3 meter thick concrete raft and foundations that the building will sit on.
The scheme is now rapidly growing having reached a little over half its full height. 23 Marina should top out in the beginning of 2009 at current rates with the residents moving in sometime in 2010.
